WWE Nearly Launched Cruiserweight Tag Division with Title Belts
WWE almost introduced Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships—and now we know for sure it wasn’t just fan speculation.
Former WWE star Ariya Daivari just confirmed that WWE did have plans to bring in tag team titles for the 205 Live brand back in the day. In fact, he says he physically held one of the titles before the idea was scrapped.
The whole thing started when a fan replied to one of Daivari’s tweets, referencing Lince Dorado’s previous claim that a set of Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles was created but never used. Daivari didn’t just agree—he dropped confirmation from firsthand experience: “Yeah I literally held one of em. Idk why they didn’t use them.”
The Cruiserweight division was relaunched in 2016 after the wildly successful Cruiserweight Classic, with the championship going to T.J. Perkins. The division eventually made its way to Raw, then 205 Live, and later NXT, before the title was retired in January 2022. But throughout its run, the roster never got to compete for tag gold—even though plenty of stables and teams were featured.
While it’s still unclear why WWE scrapped the belts, Daivari’s tweet confirms they were far more than just an idea on paper.
Currently, Daivari is signed to AEW, where he wrestles under the Ring of Honor banner, but his revelation gives a rare peek behind the curtain at what could’ve added a whole new layer to the 205 Live era.
